The Things He Does

Today I found Sean in the bathroom, fully dressed, putting shampoo in his dry hair. I guess he decided he wanted to take a bath on his own. Last weekend, he and his cousin, Sarah, got into some of my lipstick and got it all over themselves. I’m still trying to get the stains out of his clothes. Last week, I found him sharing a half a loaf of sandwich bread with the dog. I also found him earlier today with cat hair all over himself, including in his mouth. I asked what he was doing. His reply? “I kiss Callie.” Callie is our poor cat, who is now probably missing some hair. Sean is constantly getting into things these days. I can’t seem to take my eyes off of him for even a couple minutes. Sometimes I’ll take a shower while he’s napping, but I’m scared I’ll finish my shower and find that he woke up early and decided to draw on the walls or something. This is such a strange age… what will he come up with next??

$1.29 worth of FUN!

We’ve been doing a budget the past couple of months, and this month, we’ve had to do some shuffling around of the funds to cover expenses for entertaining people at our home. As of today, we have no more spending money except $1.29 left in our “entertainment fund”. I told Nathan to go to town. I think he could afford an mp3, or he could go buy something at the $ store. We still technically have 4 days before we start the new month’s budget, but thankfully, we’ve already got all that we need for the rest of the month. I must say, I was very creative with the budget this month. 🙂

Hosting Thanksgiving

We are hosting our first Thanksgiving at our house this year, so I will be roasting my first turkey. I probably should have done a “trial run”, but I didn’t know what we would have done with all the leftovers. Anyways, I’ve been scouring the internet for advice, how-to pages, and the like trying to get a grasp on how to cook a turkey. It seems that there are a lot of discrepancies when it comes to “how long” to cook it. I have a 21 pound turkey. Some sites say it will take 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 hours to cook. Other sites say it will take up to 7 hours to cook. I find this discrepancy a bit strange. I’ve decided that it may be due to the fact that a turkey may not be completely thawed out. Supposedly, if a turkey is still frozen, it can take up to 50% longer to cook as it would if it had been thawed out completely. I’ve decided to not rely on the time, but I will allow for about 6 hours for it to cook. I’ve invested in an oven safe thermometer, and when the internal temperature reaches 180, I will call it done. Now that’s another discrepancy I’ve found… some sites say 165, others say 180 degrees F. I think I’ll go with 180, since that’s the “safe” temperature listed for poultry on my thermometer. And when things don’t go right, I hope that there are pizza places open on Thanksgiving so we don’t go hungry. 🙂

I’m on Craigslist!

I finally got around to putting some items up for sale on Craigslist. I wonder how many people actually get something sold on there versus the number of ads put up. I’ve bought from people on there a few times. Anyways, I might start a new link to the stuff I have for sale on craigslist. On another note, Nathan showed me this site that sorts craigslist ads and also shows all on one page and shows thumbnails of pictures so you can compare items, prices, etc. Pretty neat.

Update: Check out “My Stuff on Craigslist” under my Personal Pages to see what’s up for sale.

Tuna + Cottage Cheese + Miracle Whip

No, I’m not pregnant. I tried this combination today because I was low on Miracle Whip, but I like my Tuna sandwiches creamy. It turned out quite tastey once I added chopped dill pickles into the mix. And I think it turned out to be lower in fat than my usual way of doing tuna with just the miracle whip or mayonnaise. I messaged Nathan about my discovery:

vanalter: tuna + cottage cheese + miracle whip = yummy to my tummy

nathanalter: you and you alone!

Needless to say, Nathan does not share my love for cottage cheese nor tuna.

Reading Rainbow

Sean and I often like to watch reading rainbow in the mornings. Today on Reading Rainbow, it was about children who have an absent parent due to prison, alcoholism, or other problems. It was a shock to me when Levar said that 1 in 40 children in the U.S. have either a mother or father in prison. Yikes! On a side note, does anyone else out there think it’s still strange to see Levar’s eyes?

Chocolate to Adora

I just got a couple samples of Adora Chocolate Calcium Supplements , and they are TASTEY! I tried both the milk chocolate and the dark chocolate ones and they taste like regular chocolates, but each provides 50% of you daily amount of Calcium plus other vitamins, like D and K. At 30 calories each, I think this might be a great way to get your daily amount of calcium, if you can’t get yourself to drink milk, or if you’re lactose intolerant like me. These still have a small amount of milk in them, but they probably won’t cause stomach upset like drinking milk would for lactose intolerant people.

UPDATE: I got a comment left by one of the Adora Marketing people and he said you can get free samples here. And BTW, he also told me the dark chocolates are dairy free.

Freecycle, Craigslist

I scored some free/inexpensive items today on Freecycle.org and Craiglist. I got a pictionary game off of Freecycle. I played this recently and had a blast. I also scored a bike trailer for Sean to ride in and a jogging stroller for pretty cheap on Craigslist. I can hardly wait to use them. I LOVE IT!!! It’s like thrift store shopping online, except sometimes it’s free!
