About a week ago, I tore my right calf muscle. I’ve previously pulled the same muscle (about 2 years ago) and it took about a week for me to walk without a limp, then took a long time before I could do anything high impact. This time, the injury is much worse. I haven’t been able to walk without crutches. Some days I’m able to put a little weight on that leg (still with crutches), but other days, it hurts too much. Bruising appeared a couple days ago. I’m still icing and elevating it when I can. It’s looking like a long recovery ahead of me. I’ve been having muscle spasms throughout the day/night, sometimes painful enough to wake me up at night. I’m on prescription Naproxen for the pain, and when it gets close to doseage time, I can certainly feel the pain getting stronger. I haven’t been driving because it is painful to put pressure on the foot sometimes and I probably wouldn’t be able to do a hard brake if I needed to.
Getting around on crutches is pretty exhausting, and sometimes downright painful. My arms are getting a good workout, for sure. If anyone has any advice, I’d love to hear it. I’ve started doing some massage on that muscle, and that seems to help temporarily, so that it isn’t as painful, but then the muscle spasms again, and I’m back at square one. Too bad I got this injury in the Spring… the weather is so nice lately, I want to take walks. I’d gladly be a shut-in during the winter time! 🙂 I’m hoping that eventually, I’ll be pain free enough that I can ride my bike while I’m still recovering. That would still be a few weeks off, though. This injury is no fun. Make sure you take care of your muscles and stretch and warm up well.
We played basketball with some friends last night and Nathan and I realized how terrible we were at basketball. The passing the ball part is not a problem… it’s the shooting and making the ball go in that was lacking. I also realized that it takes some effort and good timing to be able to rebound the ball. I used to yell at the tv whenever the team I was rooting for would miss rebounds. I would think, “how hard is it to jump up and get the ball?”… but I could never get my timing right to jump at the right time to pick up the rebound… and the jumping part was hard for me too… I apparently can’t jump very high.
Yeah, so it’s been several months since my last post on my weight loss blog, and a pretty slow year in terms of fitness progress, so I feel it is time to revive my blog since it helps me feel more accountable to all of the people (person? imaginary friend?) who read it. So go read it! 🙂 And feel free to leave me comments especially if you have a favorite workout you like to do… I’m always looking for new things.
I’ve been on a long quest to lose weight the past few years. I’m glad to say that I’m back to the weight I was when Nathan and I fist started dating. I recently found a website called Traineo.com. You can log in your workouts, your diet, and weight and the site graphs it so you can see your progress. It also calculates your calories burned during your workout, and it tells you how far to your goal and how long you have to get there. You can also add “motivators”… these are people who can see your progress and leave you messages and comments to keep you motivated and hold you accountable. I don’t have any motivators yet… anyone want to volunteer? 🙂
I tried a new thing tonight… stir-fried iceberg lettuce. I made a stir-fry with summer squash, broccoli, onions, garlic, mushrooms, and iceberg lettuce. I added some Asian Vinagrette, salt and pepper to it while it was cooking. The lettuce acts just like other greens… doesn’t really add any flavor, just soaks up the flavor of the sauce. It turned out pretty good. Apparently, cooking lettuce is a popular thing to do in some Chinese dishes.
Nathan was kind enough to work out with me tonight. We did my “Bikini Ready Fast!” video. Thankfully, it didn’t require either of us to be in bikinis. We tried to get Sean to exercise with us too, but he didn’t want to, so Nathan told him, “you’re gonna get a fat belly”. And one time Sean said, “I want fat belly”.
I was browsing some of the Yahoo! fitness groups online this evening. This is the funniest one I’ve come across. It’s a fitness group that says they “Walk, run, hike, bike, blade, or swim” and they are “following the path of the hobbits in Middle Earth as they go to see the elves in Rivendell.” Hmmm, where do I sign up? 🙂
I wonder if their next challenge will be to do some sort of martial arts exercise for the duration of the Battle at Helm’s Deep. Taebo anyone?
I’m happy to say that I bought a couple of tops today and they were size “large” instead of “extra large”. YAAAY! XL used to be too small for me about 2 months ago. Seems the exercise is paying off. I’m at 2 weeks of exercising regularly (3-6 times/wk). My next aim is to get my portion sizes under control. Check out my workout blog here. One thing that I noticed is that my upper body and lower body tone up and slim down quicker than my midsection. How annoying!
Sean and I got up (rather, Sean got ME up) at 9:30 this morning. Shortly after, I decided to take him on a brisk walk so I could workout a bit. After the walk, we headed over to the playground so he could play and get his “workout”. Nearby, Sean saw the sprayground, and kept asking to play in the water. So we went back home and got our swimsuits on and went to the spray ground. Of course, after we got there, Sean didn’t want to play in the water much… I had more fun than he did. Anyways, we frolicked around there for a bit (frolicked because running is not allowed), then we went home. By the time we got home, Nathan was (finally) awake after staying up til 3 last night. So we went out for lunch (Koury’s greek food is DA BEST!) since it was already after 1 pm. Then we got home, Sean took a nap, and we watched King Kong (kinda scary, pretty sad). Then after Sean woke up, we all (including Nathan and the dog) walked to the playground again. Cookie (the dog) and I had to leave early because she got bit by a red ant, and it was making her limp and show general discomfort. So we came home and I finally sat down for a little while. Pretty busy day, if ya ask me.
So I’m starting back on my workout kick… I had fallen off the wagon, so to speak, for a little while. I did pretty good this week though. I’m planning on starting a program that’ll have me working out 6 days a week, but the workouts are not too tedious… walking/running and some moderate weight training. Pretty doable, as long as I make the time to do it. I’m probably gonna start a weight loss blog mostly for my benefit, so I can keep track of progress, or lack thereof. I think it’s time to get serious about dropping my excess poundage. Anyways, if anyone is interested, check it out here.
